It all began with a kitten. In November of 2014 a malnourished, flea ridden baby girl was found on the steps of my work building at the U of M Saint Paul campus. She was cold but brave. We brought her inside and looked for any signs of an owner. I spent my entire shift playing with this black and white nameless kitten. When my shift was over, we still did not have any owners come forward to claim her, so of course, I took her home. No warning to my housemates or boyfriend, I brought her home and quickly went to the pet store to get supplies. I am completely out of my element. I grew up with dogs, making me a “dogs are better than cats” person; but when that black and white kitten purred to sleep on my chest, I knew I was a cat person after all. KitKat is the cat that started it all. She opened my heart to a love I didn’t know existed.
